E83 X3 ABS Sensor – Front Left or Right, Ref 34523420330

This E83 X3 ABS sensor is a front wheel speed sensor that the supplier lists for the BMW X3 (E83) from 2004 to 2010, and it is described as suitable for either the left or the right front wheel. It is sold singly under the reference numbers 34523420330 and 34523405906. Easy Life Markets sells it for X3 owners and workshops who have traced an ABS or stability control warning to a failed front sensor.

Each wheel on the X3 has its own sensor that reads how fast that wheel is turning. The ABS control unit compares the four signals many times a second, and the same data feeds the stability and traction systems. When one sensor stops reporting, the car cannot trust the comparison, so it switches those systems off and lights the warnings on the dash. The brakes still work, but without anti-lock control. The wheel speed sensor article describes how these sensors generate their signal.

What Is Included

  • 1 x front ABS wheel speed sensor with attached lead and connector

The product photos show a black sensor head with a metal-sleeved mounting eye, a long lead with moulded rubber grommets along its length, and a blue plug at the far end. The mounting bolt is not listed, so keep your original one.

Compatibility

The supplier lists this sensor for:

  • BMW X3 (E83), model years 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010, front axle, left or right

The supplier also warns that its compatibility information may not be completely accurate, and we would rather pass that warning on than hide it. Here is how to be sure:

  1. Read the number on the old sensor. It is printed on the lead or the plug. Compare it with 34523420330 or 34523405906.
  2. Use your VIN. Enter the last seven characters in a BMW parts catalogue and look up the front pulse generator for the ABS/DSC system.
  3. Compare the plug. Your original should have the same style of blue connector as the one in the photos.

You can also send us your VIN and we will check it against the reference numbers before you order. If your car is right-hand drive, mention that too, because the supplier asks buyers of right-hand-drive vehicles to take extra care when matching parts.

Symptoms of a Failing Front Sensor

  • ABS, DSC and brake warning lights on together
  • The lights come on a few seconds after pulling away, once the car expects a speed signal
  • ABS pulsing through the pedal at low speed on a dry road
  • A fault code that names the front left or front right wheel speed sensor
  • On some cars, a speedometer that drops out or cruise control that will not engage

Read the fault memory before buying. The code tells you which corner is at fault, and it saves you replacing a good sensor. A damaged lead, a corroded plug or a cracked or rusty reluctor ring can set the same code, so look at those while the wheel is off.

Replacing the Sensor

  • Raise the front of the car, support it on stands and remove the wheel.
  • Follow the lead from the hub to its plug in the wheel arch and unplug it. Free the grommets from their holders.
  • Undo the single bolt at the hub. If the sensor is stuck in its bore, work it out gently with penetrating oil. Do not lever against the hub.
  • Clean the bore with a small brush so the new sensor seats fully. A sensor that sits proud will read badly.
  • Fit the new sensor, tighten the bolt to the service manual figure and clip the lead back into every holder.
  • Clear the stored fault and drive the car. The lights should go out once the control unit sees a signal from all four wheels.

Wear eye protection when working under the arch. ABS is part of the braking system, so if you are unsure about any step, have a qualified mechanic fit the part.

Why the Lead Routing Matters

A front sensor lead moves with the steering and the suspension. That is why it has grommets and clips at set points. If the lead is left loose it can touch the tyre or be pulled tight on full lock, and it will fail again within weeks. Take a photo of the original routing before you remove anything and copy it exactly.

Who This Sensor Is For

It suits E83 X3 owners who have a confirmed front sensor fault, independent BMW workshops, and mobile mechanics who want a replacement they can match by part number.

Common Questions

Is this a genuine BMW part? No. It is an unbranded aftermarket sensor sold under the BMW reference numbers 34523420330 and 34523405906.

Does one sensor do both front wheels? The supplier lists it for the left or the right front wheel. You get one sensor, so order two if both sides need replacing.

Will it fit the rear? No. It is listed for the front axle only.
