Ford Focus 1.5T Timing Belt Kit – Also Listed for the 1.6T Engine

This Ford Focus 1.5T timing belt kit is a replacement engine timing belt set for the newer-generation Focus with the 1.5-liter or 1.6-liter turbocharged petrol engine (sold as the 1.5T and 1.6T). The product photos show the timing belt together with its tensioner pulley, the two parts that do the most work in the timing drive. Easy Life Markets sells it as a replacement kit for owners and workshops carrying out a scheduled timing belt service.

A timing belt is one of those parts you do not think about until the service interval comes around, but it is one of the most important. If it slips or breaks, the engine stops, and on many engines the valves and pistons can collide and cause expensive damage.

What a Timing Belt Does

The timing belt links the crankshaft to the camshafts so the valves open and close at exactly the right moment for each piston stroke. It is a toothed rubber belt reinforced with strong internal cords, and the tensioner keeps it at the right tightness as it warms up and cools down. Over time the rubber hardens and the teeth wear, and the tensioner bearing wears too. That is why belts are replaced at set intervals, and why the tensioner is normally changed with the belt.

Reasons to replace your Focus timing belt include:

  • The vehicle has reached the mileage or age interval in the service schedule
  • Cracks, fraying, glazing or missing teeth on the old belt
  • Oil or coolant contamination on the belt
  • A noisy or rough tensioner bearing
  • You have bought a used car and have no record of when the belt was last done

What Is Included

As pictured in the product photos:

  • 1 x engine timing belt
  • 1 x timing belt tensioner pulley

Please compare the photos with your engine before ordering. If you also plan to replace the water pump, idler pulleys or seals, those are sold separately.

Checking Fitment

The Focus has been sold in several generations and with many engines, including naturally aspirated petrol, turbo petrol and diesel options. This kit is listed only for the 1.5T and 1.6T turbo petrol engines on the newer Focus. Before you order:

  1. Confirm your engine. Check your registration papers or the badge and engine cover for 1.5T or 1.6T.
  2. Find the engine code. The engine code, usually printed on the engine or in your service book, is the most reliable way to look up the correct timing parts.
  3. Compare with the old parts. Count the belt teeth and compare the tensioner shape with our photos when the old parts come off.

If your Focus has a different engine, or you are not sure which one it has, contact us before buying and we will help you check.

Signs of a Worn Tensioner

The tensioner does a lot of quiet work. Its bearing spins every time the engine runs, and the spring or eccentric mechanism has to keep the belt at the right tension through thousands of heat cycles. Signs that the tensioner is on its way out include a whirring or squealing noise from the belt end of the engine, a belt that looks loose or flutters when the engine is running, and uneven wear along one edge of the belt. Because a failed tensioner can take the belt with it, it makes sense to replace both together, which is exactly what this kit is for.

Parts to Check at the Same Time

With the timing covers off, take the opportunity to look at the parts around the belt. Check the water pump for leaks or bearing play, look at the camshaft and crankshaft oil seals for signs of oil, and inspect any idler pulleys. The auxiliary drive belt often has to come off anyway, so it is a good moment to replace it if it is worn. Doing these checks now costs very little extra time compared with taking everything apart again later.

Installation Advice

Changing a timing belt on a modern turbo engine is precision work. The camshafts and crankshaft must be locked in the correct position with the proper timing tools, and a mistake can bend valves. Many owners have the job done by a professional. If you are experienced and doing it yourself:

  • Use the engine locking tools specified for your engine and follow the manufacturer's procedure step by step.
  • Never turn the camshafts or crankshaft with the belt removed unless the procedure tells you to.
  • Keep oil, coolant and grease off the new belt, and do not twist or kink it.
  • Set the tensioner exactly as described in the service information.
  • Turn the engine over by hand at least two full turns and recheck the timing before you start it.
  • Record the date and mileage so you know when the next change is due.
