Hyundai Elantra Valve Cover with Gasket – 2.0L DOHC, 2004–2010 Applications

This Hyundai Elantra valve cover is a replacement engine valve cover for the 2.0L four-cylinder DOHC gas engine, supplied with a new valve cover gasket and an oil filler cap. The same cover is listed for several Hyundai and Kia models that share this engine, including the Kia Spectra, from 2004 to 2010 depending on the model. It replaces part numbers 22410-23800, 22410-23801 and 22410-23100, as well as 264-916. Easy Life Markets sells it as a ready-to-fit set: cover, gasket and cap in one order.

Why Valve Covers Need Replacing

The valve cover (also called a rocker cover) sits on top of the cylinder head and keeps oil in and dirt out of the camshaft area. On this engine the cover is plastic, and after years of heat cycles it can warp or crack. Once that happens, a new gasket alone will not stop the leak. Common signs include:

  • Oil seeping around the edge of the valve cover or down the back of the engine
  • A burning oil smell after driving, from oil dripping onto the exhaust manifold
  • Oil in the spark plug wells
  • A visible crack or distortion in the cover
  • A worn or broken breather fitting on the cover

Replacing the cover and gasket together is usually the cleanest fix, and it means the new gasket seals against a flat, undamaged surface.

Compatibility

This valve cover is listed for the following vehicles with the 2.0L (1975cc) inline-four DOHC gas engine:

  • Hyundai Elantra 2.0L, 2004–2006
  • Hyundai Tiburon 2.0L, 2004–2008
  • Hyundai Tucson 2.0L, 2005–2009
  • Kia Spectra 2.0L, 2004–2009
  • Kia Spectra5 2.0L, 2005–2009
  • Kia Sportage 2.0L, 2007–2010

All of these vehicles use versions of Hyundai's 2.0-litre Beta II engine. The cover does not fit other engine options in the same models, such as V6 versions of the Tiburon, Tucson or Sportage, so please check your engine size before ordering.

Replaces Part Numbers

  • 22410-23100 / 2241023100
  • 264-916 / 264916

If the part number on your old cover or in your parts catalogue matches one of these, you have found the right replacement.

Other Leak Points to Check

Oil around the top of the engine does not always come from the valve cover itself. While you are working in this area, it is worth checking a few other places on this engine:

  • Spark plug wells: oil in the plug wells usually points to worn spark plug tube seals, which sit in the underside of the valve cover.
  • Breather and PCV hoses: cracked or hard hoses can let oil vapor escape and cause messy leaks around the cover.
  • Oil filler cap: a worn cap seal lets oil mist out. A new cap is included with this cover.
  • Camshaft seal and timing cover area: oil at the timing belt end of the engine can come from a camshaft or crank seal rather than the valve cover.

Fixing all of these at the same time means you only take the top of the engine apart once.

Why Replace the Whole Cover

A valve cover gasket on its own is cheaper, and if the old cover is flat and undamaged, a gasket may be all you need. The problem is that plastic covers on this engine can bow slightly after years of heat, and a small crack near a bolt hole or the breather fitting is easy to miss. If you fit a new gasket to a distorted cover, the leak can come back quickly. A complete cover with a new gasket takes the guesswork out of the repair.

Installation Notes

Swapping a valve cover on this engine is a moderate job. If you are comfortable with basic tools, a few pointers will help:

  • Let the engine cool fully before you start.
  • Label and disconnect the ignition coils or plug leads, breather hoses and any wiring brackets on top of the cover.
  • Remove the old cover bolts gradually and evenly.
  • Clean the sealing surface on the cylinder head thoroughly. Old gasket material or oil left on the surface can cause a new leak.
  • Check the manufacturer's service information for any recommended sealant at the joints near the timing cover and camshaft caps.
  • Seat the new gasket fully in its groove, then tighten the cover bolts in stages, working from the center outward, to the torque in your service manual. Overtightening can crack a plastic cover.
  • Reconnect everything, start the engine and check for leaks once it is warm.
