VEVOR Carrier and Pinion Bearing Puller for Dana and Ford 10.25 Axles

This VEVOR pinion bearing puller is a clamshell-style tool for pulling pressed-on carrier and pinion bearings during differential work. The supplier lists it as compatible with bearings on Dana 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 and 80 axles and the Ford 10.25 inch axle. It comes with three clamshells, a plug, adjuster rings and a stand that keeps everything together on the bench. Easy Life Markets sells it for axle builders, gear installers and home mechanics who are tired of fighting bearings off with a chisel.

Anyone who has set up a ring and pinion knows the problem. Getting the pinion depth and carrier preload right means fitting shims behind the bearings, checking the pattern, and often taking the bearings off again to change the shims. A jaw puller has very little to grab on these bearings and tends to tear the cage. A clamshell puller closes around the bearing and pulls on the inner race, which is the part that is actually pressed onto the shaft. If you want the background on what these bearings support, the differential article is a good place to start.

How the Puller Works

The supplier shows the job in four steps:

  1. Place the main body over the plug.
  2. Adjust the lower and upper adjusting rings so the tool sits at the right height for the bearing.
  3. Pick the clamshell that suits the bearing, close it around the bearing and tighten the retaining ring so it cannot spread.
  4. Turn the hex on top of the main body to draw the bearing off. The supplier shows this being done with an impact gun.

The plug gives the centre screw something to push against, and the clamshell pulls the bearing up evenly all the way round.

Which Bearings It Suits

The supplier lists Dana 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 and 80 bearings and Ford 10.25 inch bearings. It does not list individual bearing part numbers or say which clamshell goes with which axle, so before ordering it is worth checking a couple of things:

  • Measure the outside diameter of the bearing you need to pull and compare it with the 4.45 inch and 5.2 inch clamshell sizes.
  • Check there is enough room behind the bearing for the lip of the clamshell to seat on the inner race.
  • If your axle is not on the list above, ask us before you buy and tell us the bearing size.

Why Use a Clamshell Puller

  • It pulls on the inner race, so there is less chance of tearing the cage and rollers apart.
  • It saves time when you have to take a bearing off more than once to change shims.
  • There is no need to pry against a seal surface or cut the bearing off.
  • The stand keeps the body, plug and clamshells together between jobs.

The supplier states that the tool removes bearings without damage. In practice that depends on the clamshell seating properly, so take a moment to check it before you put a wrench on it.

Tips for Using the Tool

  • Clean the bearing and shaft first so the clamshell seats fully.
  • Make sure the retaining ring is tight before pulling. A loose ring lets the clamshell halves open.
  • Put a little grease or anti-seize on the centre screw threads so they last.
  • Start by hand or with short bursts from the impact gun and watch that the bearing is coming off straight.
  • Wear eye protection. Bearings and races are hardened and can chip.

Looking After the Puller

Wipe the tool down after use and keep the screw threads lightly oiled. Store the clamshells on the stand so the halves stay in matched pairs. Steel tools rust if they are put away wet, so keep the set somewhere dry.

Who This Tool Is For

The puller suits differential and axle shops, off-road builders who change gear ratios, and DIY mechanics doing their own ring and pinion setup on the listed Dana and Ford axles. At nearly 15 kg it is a bench tool, not something for a roadside kit.

Common Questions

Does it work on both carrier and pinion bearings? The supplier describes it as a carrier and pinion bearing puller for the listed axles. Check your bearing size against the clamshells before ordering.

Do I need an impact wrench? The supplier shows it used with an impact gun. One is not included.

Will it fit a GM or Toyota axle? Those are not listed by the supplier. Compare your bearing diameter with the clamshell sizes, or contact us first.
