1979-2004 Mustang Rear Control Arms – 4-Piece Tubular Upper and Lower Kit

These 1979-2004 Mustang rear control arms come as a set of four: two upper arms and two lower arms in red powder-coated tubular steel, with the bushings already installed and bolts and nuts in the box. The supplier lists the kit for the Ford Mustang from 1979 to 2004 in four, six and eight cylinder form, GT or LX, and for the 1979–1986 Mercury Capri. It is not for Cobras with independent rear suspension. Easy Life Markets sells the four arms together.

On a solid-axle Mustang the rear axle is held in place by four links. The two lowers run forward from the axle to the body and carry the springs. The two uppers angle in from the top of the axle and stop it moving sideways. Each one is a control arm with a bushing at each pivot, and on a car that may be decades old those bushings are often soft, cracked or oil-soaked. When they give, the axle shifts under power and braking. Replacing all four arms renews every pivot at once.

What You Get

  • 2 x rear upper control arms
  • 2 x rear lower control arms
  • Bushings, installed in the arms
  • Bolts and nuts

The supplier states that the bushings are fitted to the arms before dispatch. No fitting instructions are included. Springs, shock absorbers and the bushings that press into the axle housing are not listed.

What the Photos Show

The product photos are worth a close look before you order. The lower arms are long round tubes with a bushing at each end, a circular spring cup welded on top and a tab with two holes on the side. The upper arms are shorter: a tube with a bushing at one end and a U-shaped bracket with a bolt hole through both ears at the other. All four are finished in gloss red with black bushings. If the arms on your car have the same layout, that is a good first sign.

Compatibility

The supplier's application list reads:

  • Ford Mustang, 1979–2004
  • Ford Mustang 4-cylinder, 6-cylinder and 8-cylinder, GT or LX, 1979–2004
  • Mercury Capri, 1979–1986
  • Mustang Cobra, 1993–1998

And one exclusion, in the supplier's words: this item will not fit the 1994–2004 Mustang Cobra with the independent rear suspension.

The two Cobra lines overlap, so do not rely on the year alone. What matters is the rear axle. These arms are for cars with a solid rear axle located by four links. To check yours:

  1. Look under the back of the car. A solid axle is one rigid housing from wheel to wheel with coil springs sitting on the lower arms. An independent rear has a subframe and a half shaft to each wheel. If you have the second layout, this kit is not for your car.
  2. Count the links. You should see two lower arms and two shorter upper arms going to the top of the axle.
  3. Compare with the photos below, paying attention to the spring cup on the lowers and the bracket end on the uppers.
  4. Ask us. Send us your VIN or photos of the rear suspension and we will help you compare them with the supplier's information.

Signs the Rear Arms or Bushings Are Worn

  • A clunk from the rear when you pull away, change gear or come off the throttle
  • Wheel hop under hard acceleration
  • The back of the car feeling loose or steering itself over bumps
  • Rear tyres wearing unevenly
  • Bushings that are visibly cracked, squashed or pulled out of their shells
  • Bent or rusted original arms

Installation Notes

  • The supplier strongly recommends a professional installer, and no instructions come with the kit.
  • The lower arms carry the rear springs. Support the axle on a jack and lower it slowly to release spring tension before unbolting anything. A spring let go suddenly can cause serious injury.
  • Support the body on stands rated for the car, placed on the chassis and not on the axle.
  • Change one arm at a time so the axle stays located.
  • Leave the pivot bolts snug, set the car back on its wheels, and then tighten them to the service manual torque at ride height.
  • The supplier recommends an alignment after installation. Have the pinion angle and thrust angle checked at the same visit.

Rear control arms hold the axle in the car, so treat them as safety-critical. If you are not equipped for this work, have a qualified mechanic do it.

Why Replace All Four Together

The four links share the job of locating the axle. One new arm among three tired ones still lets the axle move on the old bushings, and the fresh arm then takes more than its share of the load. Fitting the full set gives matched bushings at every pivot and means the springs only come out once.

Who This Kit Suits

Owners restoring or refreshing a solid-axle Mustang or a 1979–1986 Capri, people who want the rear end to feel tighter for street or track use, and workshops rebuilding a tired rear suspension in one job. The supplier describes the arms as designed for street, track and drift use.

Common Questions

Are these genuine Ford parts? No. They are aftermarket arms. The supplier's description names Maxpeedingrods.

Do I have to press bushings in? Not into the arms. The supplier fits those before dispatch.
