The H88 is a 4K mini action camera about the size of a thumb. The supplier gives its weight as 35.7 grams, and it has no screen: you clip it on, press the button and frame the shot on your phone over Wi-Fi if you need to. A conventional action camera is a small box that needs a mount. A thumb camera is closer to a body camera. It is light enough to hang on a shirt or a collar without pulling, so it records what you see while both hands stay free. The names suggest that the "minimalist" and "simple match" bundles carry fewer accessories and the "high end" bundles carry more. Please do not assume that every bundle includes every accessory mentioned on this page. Recording Time
The supplier gives up to 150 minutes of continuous recording at 1080P, 120 minutes at 2K and 90 minutes at 4K, and says the camera can record while charging. These are best-case figures. Cold weather, Wi-Fi left on and an older memory card all shorten them. For a long ride, a small power bank in a pocket with a cable to the camera gets round the limit.
Where the Supplier's Figures Differ
- Waterproof depth. The written overview says the waterproof case is good to 40 metres (131 feet). One of the supplier's pictures says 30 metres. Work to the lower figure.
- Angle of view. One picture says 120 degrees and another says 170 degrees. We cannot tell you which is right.
- Pixels. The 48 million figure is listed without detail. On small cameras a figure like this often describes enlarged photos and not the sensor itself, so judge the camera by its video resolution.
The Camera Is Not Waterproof on Its Own
This is the supplier's own statement, and it matters. The bare camera is not waterproof. It only goes in water inside the waterproof case, and only if your bundle includes that case. Before any dive, close the empty case, hold it under water for a few minutes and check for leaks. Rinse the case in fresh water after use in the sea.
Ways to Mount It
- Magnet. The body sticks to iron and steel surfaces: a fridge door, a toolbox, a shelf upright.
- Magnetic lanyard. A magnetic pad on a lanyard hangs round the neck and the camera snaps onto it at chest height.
- Back clip. The pictures show a spring clip that rotates through 360 degrees, for a collar, pocket, belt or bag strap.
- Helmet and handlebar mounts. The pictures show the camera on the top and side of a helmet and on a bicycle handlebar. The overview mentions seven further mounting accessories. Which of them you receive depends on the bundle.
A magnet alone is not a secure mount on a moving vehicle. Use a clamp or a tether for anything faster than walking.
Memory Cards
4K video writes a lot of data. If you buy without a card, choose a TF card from a known maker with a U3 or V30 speed marking. Format the card in the camera before first use, and again if recordings start to stutter.
First Use
- Charge the camera with the data cable.
- Insert the TF card.
- Switch on and connect your phone to the camera over Wi-Fi to check the framing.
- Clip the camera on, press the button to start, and check the first clip before relying on it.
