LR3 LR4 Air Suspension Strut – Front Air Spring and Shock for Land Rover

This LR3 LR4 air suspension strut is a complete front unit, with the air spring and the shock absorber built together, for the Land Rover LR3 and LR4. The supplier lists one strut per order and says it can be fitted to either the front left or the front right. It is sold under the reference numbers RNB501250 and RNB501580, among others. Easy Life Markets offers it for owners whose original front air strut has started to leak or sag.

On these Land Rovers there are no steel coil springs at the front. The body rides on a column of air held inside a rubber air spring, and the compressor adds or releases air to raise and lower the vehicle. Rubber ages. After enough years and enough heat cycles the air spring develops fine cracks, usually where it rolls over itself, and it begins to lose pressure. The damper inside can also wear and leak oil. Either fault means a new strut. The air suspension article explains how the system as a whole works.

What Is Included

  • 1 x front air suspension strut (air spring and shock absorber assembly)

The product photos show the strut with its top plate, three mounting studs with nuts, a brass air line fitting and the lower mounting bush. There is no VDS sensor on this strut, and fitting instructions are not included.

Compatibility

The supplier lists this strut for vehicles without ACE and without VDS:

  • Land Rover Discovery LR3 (L319), 2005–2009
  • Land Rover Discovery LR4 (L319), 2010–2014
  • Range Rover Sport (L320), 2006–2014. The supplier's text calls this model "Range Rover Discovery Sport L320". L320 is the Range Rover Sport chassis code, so check this application by part number.

The two exclusions are important. Vehicles with ACE or with VDS use a different front strut, and this one has no VDS sensor. If your vehicle has either system, do not order this part on the model name alone.

The supplier's reference numbers are: LR013930, LR014194, LR016403, LR016414, LR016415, LR016416, LR016426, LR016427, LR018398, LR032646, LR034282, LR034283, LR034284, LR041108, RNB501180, RNB501250, RNB501460, RNB501470, RNB501480, RNB501580, RNB501590, RNB501600, RNB501610, RNB501620, RNB000855, RNB000856, RNB000857 and RNB000858.

To confirm the fit:

  1. Find the number on your old strut or look it up by VIN in a Land Rover parts catalogue, then compare it with the list above.
  2. Check the top of the strut in the photos against yours: three studs and one air line fitting.
  3. Ask us. Send your VIN and we will help you check before you buy.

When to Replace a Front Air Strut

The supplier's own guide in the product photos lists the usual warning signs, and they match what we hear from owners:

  • One front corner, or the whole front, sinks when the vehicle is parked
  • The body bounces and will not settle on a rough road
  • Heavy lean in bends and nose dive under braking
  • Knocking or other unusual noise from the front suspension
  • Uneven wear across the front tyres
  • Oil leaking from the damper

A suspension fault message and a compressor that runs constantly are other common clues. Do not keep driving on a leaking air spring for long. The compressor has to work much harder to keep up, and it can burn out.

Installation Tips and Leak Prevention

The supplier recommends professional installation. If you do the job yourself, these points come from the supplier's leak-prevention guide and from general workshop practice:

  • Depressurise the air system with a suitable diagnostic tool before you open any air line. Never undo a fitting under pressure.
  • Support the vehicle on stands under the chassis. Do not rely on the air suspension to hold it up.
  • Check the end of the air line. It must be round and cut clean and square. A flattened or angled end will not seal.
  • Make sure the air line is seated properly and routed without kinks.
  • Tighten the three top nuts and the lower bolt to the service manual figures.
  • Once the system is refilled, spray soapy water over the fittings and the air spring itself. Bubbles show a leak straight away.
  • Have the ride height calibration checked afterwards.

An air strut is a pressurised, safety-critical part. If you do not have the equipment to depressurise and recalibrate the system, leave it to a Land Rover specialist.

One Strut or Two?

This listing is for a single strut. If only one side has failed and the other is still dry and holding air, replacing one is reasonable. If both front struts are original and of the same age, expect the second to follow. Order two if you want to do both sides in one visit.

Who This Strut Is For

It is for LR3 and LR4 owners, and for workshops, replacing a failed front air strut on a vehicle without ACE or VDS, after the part number has been matched.

Common Questions

Is this a genuine Land Rover part? No. The supplier states it is an aftermarket strut that replaces the original. It is not made by Land Rover.

Does it fit the rear? No. The supplier lists it for the front, left or right.

Is a height sensor or compressor included? No. You receive the strut only.
