Most car mounts depend on a round air vent or a flat piece of dashboard. Many newer cars have neither: the vents are thin slots and the dash is curved or textured. Which Phones It Holds

The supplier describes the magnet as made for MagSafe iPhones and names the 12, 13 and 14 series. Those phones have a ring of magnets in the back and attach directly. For other phones, the kit includes a magnetic guide ring: stick it to the back of the phone or to a thin case and it gives the mount something to hold. A few points to check:

1. Your case. A thick or non-magnetic case weakens the hold. A case with its own magnetic ring works best.
2. Phone weight. Large, heavy phones put more load on the magnet over bumps. Test the hold at home before relying on it.
3. The guide ring. Once stuck on, it is meant to stay. Position it carefully and press it down firmly.

• Bend the strap to the shape of the surface before you peel the backing, and check the phone position.
• Peel the adhesive backing, press the holder on and hold it firmly for half a minute or so.
• Give the adhesive time to bond before hanging a phone on it. A day is a sensible wait.
• Avoid soft-touch, leather, heavily textured or dusty surfaces. Adhesive pads grip best on smooth, hard plastic.

The second adhesive pad is a spare, useful if you move the holder to another car.

Living with It

Heat is the enemy of any stick-on mount. In a car left in strong sun, press the base down again from time to time and take the phone off when you park. To remove the holder, warm the pad gently and peel slowly so the surface underneath is not marked.
