2015-2020 Escalade Rear Air Shocks – Set of Two for Escalade, Suburban, Tahoe and Yukon

These 2015-2020 Escalade rear air shocks are supplied as a set of two for the rear axle of the Cadillac Escalade and its sister trucks, the Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe and the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL 1500. Each one is a rear shock absorber with an air sleeve around its upper body, an air inlet and a short electrical lead, as the product photos show. Easy Life Markets sells them as a pair under reference numbers that include 23151122, 84176675 and 580-1106.

On these trucks the rear shocks help hold the body level. Air is pumped into the sleeve when the rear is loaded and released when the load comes off, so the truck sits at the same height with seven people on board, a full cargo area or a trailer on the hitch. Once a sleeve begins to leak, the rear sags, the compressor works overtime and the ride turns harsh or floaty. The air suspension article covers the basic idea of supporting a vehicle on air.

Package Contents

That is everything the supplier lists. Mounting bolts, air line fittings and instructions are not listed as included.

Compatibility

The supplier's vehicle list for this set reads:

  • Cadillac Escalade, 6.2L V8, 2015–2019
  • Chevrolet Suburban, 5.3L V8, 2015–2019
  • Chevrolet Tahoe, 5.3L V8, 2015–2017
  • GMC Yukon, 5.3L and 6.2L V8, 2015–2018
  • GMC Yukon XL 1500, 2015–2018

We want to be straightforward about the years. The supplier's listing title says 2015–2020, but its detailed list stops at the years shown above, and it differs from model to model. If your truck is a later year than the list gives for your model, do not assume these will fit. Check by part number.

There is a second point. These trucks were sold with more than one rear suspension setup. The shocks in this set have both an air connection and an electrical connection. A truck with plain rear shocks, or with a different type of electronic shock, needs a different part. To be sure:

  1. Inspect your old rear shocks. Look for an air line and a wiring plug on each one.
  2. Match the number. Read the part number on the old shock or look it up by VIN in a GM parts catalogue, and compare it with the reference numbers above.
  3. Compare with the photos at the bottom of the page, paying attention to the plug and the air inlet.
  4. Still unsure? Send us your VIN and we will help you check before you order.

Symptoms of Worn Rear Air Shocks

  • The rear end is low in the morning and rises after the engine has run for a while
  • The compressor can be heard running often, or for a long time
  • A "service suspension system" style message on the instrument panel
  • The rear bottoms out over bumps when the truck is loaded
  • A bouncy, uncontrolled feeling from the back on the motorway
  • Cracked rubber on the air sleeve or oil on the shock body

Leaking air lines and a weak compressor can look like failed shocks. A quick test with soapy water on the sleeves and fittings will show where the air is escaping.

Installation Notes

  • Lift the truck and support the frame on stands. Put a second support under the rear axle, because the shocks limit how far the axle can drop.
  • Release the air pressure and disable the compressor before disconnecting the air lines.
  • Unplug the electrical connector on each shock. Release the locking tab first and do not pull on the wires.
  • Remove the upper and lower mounting bolts and take the old shock out.
  • Fit the new shock, tighten the bolts to the service manual torque, then reconnect the air line and the plug. Push the air line in until it seats.
  • Lower the truck, start the engine and let the system level. Check for leaks and clear any stored suspension codes.

Shocks are part of what keeps the tyres in contact with the road, and this system is under air pressure. If you are not set up for the job, have a qualified mechanic do it.

Looking After an Air Levelling System

New shocks last longer when the rest of the system is healthy. Replace brittle air lines while you are there. Listen to the compressor after the job: it should run briefly and stop. If it keeps running, there is still a leak somewhere. Wash road salt and mud off the sleeves now and then, because grit trapped in the folds of the rubber wears it from the outside.

Who This Set Is For

It is for owners of the listed Escalade, Suburban, Tahoe and Yukon models whose trucks already have rear air shocks with an electrical connection, and for workshops that want an aftermarket pair instead of buying each side separately.

Common Questions

Are these genuine GM parts? No. They are unbranded aftermarket shocks sold under the reference numbers listed above. They are not made by General Motors.

Can I fit them to a truck without rear air suspension? We would not recommend it. The supplier lists them as air suspension shocks, and they need an air supply to work as intended.

Is one shock for the left and one for the right? The supplier lists two rear shocks and does not give separate left and right numbers for them.
