How to Choose Bath Towels: GSM, Cotton, Size and Care Guide

How to choose bath towels: combed cotton 3-piece towel set with 600 g bath towel in five colours

Here's how to choose bath towels in one go: pick cotton for absorbency, check the weight (GSM) to decide between quick-drying and plush, choose a size that actually wraps round you, and look at how the towel is woven and finished. Then buy enough to rotate: two or three per person means there's always a dry one while the others are in the wash. Colour and pattern come last, and they're the fun part.

We sell bath towels and towel sets at Easy Life Markets, from plain three-piece cotton sets in twelve colours to embroidered hotel-style towels, a long-staple cotton set and a combed cotton gift set with a 600 g bath towel. This guide explains what GSM means, what the different cottons do, how to pick sizes and quantities, how to wash towels so they stay absorbent, and which of our towels suit which bathroom. Where we rely on an outside fact, we link to the source so you can check it.

What This Guide Covers

How to Choose Bath Towels: The Quick Checklist

  1. Material: cotton is the standard for absorbency and softness.
  2. Weight (GSM): lighter dries faster; heavier feels plusher.
  3. Yarn: long-staple and combed cotton tend to be softer and shed less.
  4. Size: a standard bath towel is around 70 x 140 cm; longer towels wrap better.
  5. Set contents: check how many bath, hand and square towels you actually get.
  6. Quantity: plan two to three bath towels per person.
  7. Colour: pick shades that suit your bathroom and hide everyday marks.
  8. Care: check you can wash them warm, and skip fabric softener.

The rest of this guide takes each point in turn.

Towel Weight and GSM Explained

GSM is the number most towel guides lead with, and it's useful once you know what it is. It's the first real decision in how to choose bath towels.

What GSM Means

GSM stands for grams per square metre. It's the same measure used for paper, where, as Wikipedia's grammage page puts it, mass per unit area is expressed in grams per square metre. For a towel, it tells you how much cotton is packed into each square metre of fabric. More cotton generally means a thicker, plusher towel that holds more water, but also one that takes longer to dry.

Rough GSM Bands

Towel makers don't follow one official scale, but these broad bands are commonly used:

Weight Rough GSM Feel Good for
Light Under about 400 Thin, quick-drying Gym bags, travel, humid bathrooms, kids
Medium About 400 to 600 Everyday soft and absorbent Most households
Heavy About 600 and up Thick, plush, hotel-style Treat towels, guest bathrooms, dry climates

Treat these as a guide, not a rule. Weave, yarn and finish change how a towel feels as much as weight does.

Working Out GSM Yourself

Most listings don't give GSM, but if they give the weight and size you can estimate it. Divide the weight in grams by the area in square metres. Our combed cotton towel set is a good example, because the supplier gives a weight for every piece. Here's our calculation from those figures:

  • Bath towel: 600 g across 0.70 x 1.40 m (0.98 square metres) works out at roughly 610 GSM.
  • Face towel: 120 g across 0.35 x 0.75 m (0.26 square metres) works out at roughly 460 GSM.
  • Square towel: 60 g across 0.32 x 0.32 m (0.10 square metres) works out at roughly 590 GSM.

So the bath towel in that set sits at the heavier, plusher end, which matches the supplier listing it as a hotel-style towel. These are our own estimates from the listed weights, not figures the supplier has published.

Heavy Isn't Always Better

A very heavy towel feels luxurious, but in a small, humid bathroom without a window it may stay damp for hours, and a towel that never dries properly starts to smell. If your bathroom is steamy or you dry towels indoors, a medium-weight towel is often the smarter choice. Heavy towels shine where there's good airflow and a heated rail or a tumble dryer.

Cotton Types: Long Staple, Combed and More

Almost every good bath towel is cotton, but not all cotton is the same. Knowing the terms on the label is a big part of how to choose bath towels that stay soft.

Why Cotton

Cotton absorbs water well, is soft against the skin and survives hot washes. That's why it dominates bath towels. Our towel sets are all listed as cotton, and the embroidered bath towel set is listed as 100% cotton.

Long-Staple Cotton

"Staple" means the length of the individual cotton fibres. Longer fibres can be spun into smoother, stronger yarn with fewer loose ends, which generally means a softer towel that sheds less lint and keeps its loops longer. The best-known long-fibre cottons, including Pima, Egyptian and Sea Island types, come from the species Gossypium barbadense. Wikipedia's article on that species notes that the International Cotton Advisory Committee defines extra-long-staple cotton as 1 3/8 inches (35 mm) or longer, and that long-fibre cultivars tend to have particularly strong fibres. Our long staple cotton towel set is spun from 32-strand yarn in twelve colours.

Combed Cotton

Combing is a step in yarn-making that brushes out the short fibres and debris before spinning. What's left is a cleaner, smoother yarn. Combed cotton towels usually feel softer and shed less than towels made from uncombed yarn. Our combed cotton gift set is made this way.

"Egyptian" and "Turkish" Labels

These names describe where the cotton or towel comes from, or a traditional style, rather than a fixed quality level. Some are excellent; some use the name loosely. Treat the label as a starting point and look at weight, yarn and reviews too.

Safety Labels: OEKO-TEX

If you want reassurance about chemicals, look for a STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX label. OEKO-TEX's own FAQ explains that the standard tests textiles for harmful substances against strict limit values, with terry products falling under the class for items in direct contact with skin, and that a label is only valid if it shows a real test number and testing institute. You can check those numbers on the OEKO-TEX website. None of our current towel listings state an OEKO-TEX certificate, so we don't claim one.

Absorbency, Softness and Drying Time: The Trade-Off

Every towel balances three things, and you can't max out all of them at once. Seeing the trade-off clearly is the heart of how to choose bath towels that suit you, rather than the ones that look best in a photo.

  • Absorbency rises with more cotton and longer, denser loops. A heavier towel holds more water before it feels wet.
  • Softness depends more on the yarn than the weight. Long-staple and combed cotton feel smoother; a light towel made from good yarn can feel softer than a heavy one made from coarse yarn.
  • Drying time goes the other way from absorbency. The more water a towel can hold, the longer it takes to dry out again.

In practice that means asking yourself one question: where does your towel dry? If it's on a heated rail in a well-ventilated bathroom, or you tumble dry, go plush. If it hangs on the back of a door in a small bathroom with no window, a medium-weight towel from good yarn will serve you better, stay fresher and still feel soft.

A sensible approach for many homes is to have both: a set of everyday medium-weight towels like the minimalist set for daily use, and one plush set like the combed cotton set for weekends and guests.

Weave, Pile and Finish

Two towels with the same weight can feel completely different because of how they're woven. This is the part of how to choose bath towels that you notice the moment you pick one up.

Terry Loops

Most bath towels are terry: a base cloth with loops of yarn standing up on the surface. The loops give a towel its absorbency, because more surface area means more water picked up. Longer, denser loops feel fluffier.

Double-Sided Towels

A double-sided terry towel has loops on both faces, so either side dries you equally well. Our double sided towel set is described this way, in ten colours from white and beige through pastels to coffee and red.

Woven Bands and Borders

The flat or patterned band near each end of a towel is called a dobby border. It's mostly decorative, but it also helps the towel keep its shape. Our towel sets show a range: a striped border on the striped border set, raised ribbed bands on the long staple set, a fine dotted band on the minimalist set and an embroidered crest on the embroidered bath towel set.

Strand Count

Some listings mention the number of strands or ply in the yarn. Our long staple cotton towels use 32-strand yarn. Higher strand counts usually mean a finer, smoother yarn, but the figure is hard to compare across brands, so use it alongside weight and feel.

New Towels and Lint

New towels often shed a little lint and can feel less absorbent at first because of finishes applied during manufacturing. Washing them a couple of times before first use usually sorts both out.

Towel Sizes and How Many You Need

Size is where a lot of towel disappointment comes from. A towel that won't wrap round you is annoying every single day, so size deserves real thought when you work out how to choose bath towels.

Common Towel Sizes

Towel Typical size Use
Square towel (face cloth) About 30 to 35 cm square Washing your face, wiping hands, small spills
Hand towel About 32 to 35 x 73 to 75 cm Beside the basin, guest bathrooms, kitchens
Bath towel About 70 x 140 cm Drying off after a bath or shower
Large bath towel About 70 x 150 cm and up Taller people, wrapping round you
Bath sheet Larger again, often around 90 x 160 cm or more Maximum coverage, beach and pool

Sizes in Our Range

How Many Towels You Need

A good rule of thumb is two to three bath towels per person: one in use, one drying or spare, and one in the wash. Add hand towels for each basin (two per basin lets you swap them while one's washed) and a few square towels. For guests, keep a separate set aside so you're never caught short.

Household Bath towels Hand towels Square towels
Single person 2 to 3 2 2 to 3
Couple 4 to 6 2 to 4 4 to 6
Family of four 8 to 12 4 to 6 6 to 8
Guest set 1 to 2 per guest 1 per guest bathroom 1 per guest

These are practical suggestions, not hard rules. Households that wash every day can manage with fewer.

Buying Sets vs Single Towels

Sets are the easiest way to match. Our 6 piece towel set gives you two bath, two hand and two square towels in one of 21 styles, which suits a couple or one person who wants a full rotation. If you already have plenty of hand towels, the bath and hand towel set lets you buy just a bath towel, just two hand towels, or a bundle.

Towels for Different Climates

Where you live changes how to choose bath towels more than most guides admit. Towels behave differently in a humid coastal flat than in a dry, heated home.

  • Hot and humid: towels take longer to dry and can turn musty. Choose medium or lighter weights, hang them in the airiest spot you have, and wash more often.
  • Cold and damp: a heated towel rail or tumble dryer lets you enjoy heavier towels. Without one, stick to medium weights.
  • Dry or centrally heated: heavy, plush towels dry quickly, so this is where a 600 g bath towel really shines.
  • Hard water areas: mineral build-up can make towels feel stiff over time. Use the right dose of detergent and avoid softener; a rinse with a cup of white vinegar in the softener drawer now and then is a common household fix.

Colour, Style and Matching

Colour is personal, but a few practical points help when you're deciding how to choose bath towels that still look good after a year.

Practical Colours

  • White looks fresh and hotel-like, and you can wash it hot. It shows make-up, fake tan and hair dye.
  • Greys, beige and taupe hide everyday marks well and suit most bathrooms.
  • Dark colours like charcoal and navy hide marks but can fade with frequent washing.
  • Bright colours are cheerful and great for giving each person their own colour.

Colour Range in Our Towels

The 6 piece set comes in 21 styles, the minimalist set and long staple set in twelve colours each, and the double sided set in ten. That makes it easy to match a wall, a tile, a shower curtain or a bath mat.

Plain or Decorative

Plain towels suit everyday use and almost any style. Embroidered towels, like our embroidered bath towel set and embroidered hand towels with a gold-beige crest, give a guest bathroom a smart, hotel feel and make a good gift.

Matching the Rest of the Bathroom

Towels are part of a bigger picture. Our marble shower curtain set and printed shower curtain and mat set come with matching mats, and a quick drying bath mat in a coordinating colour ties everything together.

Washing and Caring for Towels

Good care keeps towels soft and absorbent for years. It's the part of how to choose bath towels that happens after you buy, but it decides how long they last.

How Often to Wash

Cleveland Clinic, quoting dermatologist Dr Alok Vij, recommends that you wash your bath towel or swap in a clean one at least once a week, and more often in humid conditions. The same article suggests hanging towels spread out on a bar rather than bunched on a hook, so they dry fully between uses, and washing them in warm or hot water.

Skip the Fabric Softener

Fabric softener feels nice but works against a towel's main job. Whitegoods Help, a UK appliance advice site, explains that softener leaves a coating on fibres that reduces their ability to absorb water, and that regular use gradually reduces absorbency. If your towels feel stiff, a tumble dry, or a shake before line drying, usually helps more.

Washing Tips

  • Wash new towels once or twice before first use.
  • Wash darks and lights separately, especially early on, to avoid colour transfer.
  • Don't overload the machine; towels need room to rinse properly.
  • Use the right amount of detergent. Too much leaves residue that makes towels stiff.
  • Dry fully. A towel put away damp will smell musty.
  • Snip pulled loops with scissors rather than pulling them.

Drying and Storage

Space to dry towels properly matters as much as the towels. A towel bar spreads a towel out so it dries faster than a hook. Our stainless steel bathroom accessory set includes a single towel bar, a towel ring, a roll holder and a robe hook in 304 stainless steel, and our wall mounted shower caddy comes with an optional towel bar underneath. For more ideas, see our guide to small bathroom storage ideas.

Storing Towels So They Stay Fresh

Where towels live between washes affects how long they last, and it's an easy thing to overlook when you think about how to choose bath towels.

  • Make sure towels are bone dry before folding. Even slightly damp towels put away in a cupboard can start to smell within a day or two.
  • Store them somewhere dry and airy. A linen cupboard outside the bathroom is better than a shelf above a steamy bath.
  • Fold or roll to suit the space. Rolling fits more towels on a narrow shelf and looks neat in an open basket; folding in thirds stacks well in a cupboard.
  • Rotate the stack. Put freshly washed towels at the bottom so every towel gets used and they wear evenly.
  • Keep a spare set for guests on its own shelf, so it's always ready.

If your bathroom is short on space, our storage and shelving and bathroom storage collections have shelves, caddies and organisers that keep towels within reach without cluttering the room.

Towels or a Bathrobe?

For some people a robe is more practical than a second bath towel. A robe keeps you warm while you do your hair or make-up, and it's handy for children who won't stand still. Our kids hooded bathrobe ties at the waist and stays on, so a child can walk to the bedroom while the cotton soaks up the water. For adults, a towel plus a robe makes a comfortable routine: towel for drying, robe for warmth afterwards.

Don't Forget Hand Towels and Face Towels

Bath towels get the attention, but the small towels work hardest. A hand towel by the basin is used many times a day, often with damp, soapy hands, so it needs washing more often than a bath towel. When you think about how to choose bath towels as a set, plan the small ones too.

  • Keep two hand towels per basin so one can be washed while the other's in use.
  • Choose hand towels that dry quickly, because they're rarely fully dry before the next use.
  • Square towels (face cloths) are cheap to keep plenty of. Use a fresh one often.
  • Guests notice the hand towel first. An embroidered hand towel is a small touch that makes a cloakroom feel cared for.

Buying Towels Online: What to Check

Shopping online means you can't squeeze the towel first, so the listing has to do the work. Here's how to choose bath towels online without surprises:

  1. Read the sizes for every piece, not just the bath towel.
  2. Check the contents, especially on sets with options. Our listings explain what each option includes, and where a supplier's information is unclear, we say so.
  3. Look for weight or GSM. If it's not given, the weight per towel lets you estimate it.
  4. Check the cotton type: long-staple, combed or plain cotton.
  5. Look at close-up photos of the loops and border.
  6. Compare colours carefully; screens vary, so pick a shade you'd be happy with if it's slightly lighter or darker.
  7. Read the delivery and returns terms before ordering.

How to Choose Bath Towels for Different Needs

Everyday Family Towels

Medium weight, easy-wash cotton in a colour that hides marks, with enough to rotate. The 6 piece set or a couple of minimalist sets in different colours, one per person, work well.

A Hotel-Style Treat

Heavier weight and a smart finish. The combed cotton set with a 600 g bath towel or the embroidered set.

Tall People

Go for the 150 cm bath towels in the striped border set or the bath and hand towel bundles.

Small, Steamy Bathrooms

Medium-weight towels that dry quickly, plus somewhere to spread them out. A towel bar beats a hook. See our small bathroom storage ideas for space-saving shelves and rails.

Guest Bathrooms

Fresh, matching and a little special. Embroidered hand towels in a pack of three mean there's always a fresh one by the basin.

Children

Lighter towels that dry quickly, bright colours so each child knows which is theirs, and a hooded bathrobe for after bath time.

Gifts

Towels make a practical, welcome present. The combed cotton gift set and the embroidered set both look smart folded and stacked. No gift box is listed, so plan to wrap them yourself.

Finish the Bathroom

Good towels are half of a bathroom that feels good to use. Knowing how to choose bath towels gets you started; these pieces complete it.

Common Mistakes When Buying Bath Towels

A few slips cause most towel regrets. Keep these in mind as you work through how to choose bath towels.

  • Buying on looks alone. Weight, cotton type and size matter more than the photo.
  • Choosing the heaviest towel for a damp bathroom. It may never dry properly.
  • Too few towels. Without a rotation you'll be drying off with a damp towel.
  • Not checking what's in a set. "Set" can mean three pieces or six, and options can change the contents.
  • Using fabric softener. It makes towels feel soft and dry you less well.
  • Skipping the first wash. New towels absorb better after a wash or two.
  • Hanging towels on a hook. Spread them on a bar so they dry.

When to Replace Your Towels

Even good towels wear out. Signs it's time for a new set include a musty smell that comes back soon after washing, stiff or scratchy fibres that don't soften, thinning patches, fraying edges, and towels that seem to push water around rather than soak it up. Older towels don't have to go in the bin; they make good cleaning cloths, car rags or pet towels.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the first step in how to choose bath towels?

Decide what you want from them: quick-drying everyday towels, or plush hotel-style towels. That decides the weight (GSM), and weight narrows the choice quickly.

What GSM is best for bath towels?

Medium weights of roughly 400 to 600 GSM suit most households. Above about 600 feels plush but dries more slowly; below about 400 dries fast and suits travel and humid bathrooms.

Is long-staple cotton better for towels?

Generally, yes. Longer fibres spin into smoother, stronger yarn, which usually means softer towels that shed less and last longer.

What's the standard bath towel size?

Around 70 x 140 cm. Taller people often prefer 70 x 150 cm or a bath sheet.

How many bath towels does one person need?

Two to three: one in use, one spare or drying, and one in the wash.

How often should I wash bath towels?

Cleveland Clinic suggests at least once a week, more often in humid conditions, and hanging them spread out so they dry fully between uses.

Why are my towels not absorbent?

Fabric softener and too much detergent are the usual culprits. Skip the softener, use the right dose of detergent, and new towels often improve after a couple of washes.

Are double-sided towels better?

A double-sided terry towel has loops on both faces, so either side dries you equally well. It's a practical feature rather than a dramatic difference.

Do you sell bath towels?

Yes. Easy Life Markets sells cotton bath towel sets, long-staple and combed cotton towels, embroidered towels, hand towels and a kids' hooded bathrobe. Browse our towels and linens, and see our shipping policy, return and refund policy and FAQ.

The Bottom Line on How to Choose Bath Towels

Choose cotton, pick a weight that suits your bathroom, look for long-staple or combed yarn if softness matters, get a size that wraps round you, and buy enough to rotate. Wash them warm, skip the softener and dry them properly. That's really all there is to how to choose bath towels you'll enjoy using every day.

When you're ready, have a look at the combed cotton towel set, the long staple cotton towels, the 6 piece towel set and the rest of our towels and linens.
